How It Works

Organic farming is a method of agriculture that relies on natural fertilizers like compost, green manure, and bone meal, while promoting practices such as crop rotation and companion planting. Pest management is achieved through environmentally-friendly techniques, mixed planting, and biological controls rather than chemical pesticides.

This system focuses on using readily available resources, including animal and plant waste, along with nitrogen-fixing cover crops. Modern organic farming emerged as a response to the environmental harm caused by chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, offering numerous ecological advantages.

Compared to conventional farming, organic practices use fewer chemicals, reduce soil erosion, limit nitrate contamination in water, and recycle animal waste back into the soil. While these benefits improve sustainability, they often come with higher production costs and slightly lower yields. On average, organic crops yield about 25% less than conventional crops, though this can vary depending on the type of produce. The future of agriculture lies in balancing natural resource preservation, improving yields, lowering costs, and addressing climate change and the growing global population.
